Identify and give the significance of the following term. Systematic Distortion
Systematic distortion, in relation to this course, is when the reception of a text is consistently distorted from the original intent. Kate likened this to 'broken telephone'. In class, we spoke about systematic distortion in terms of reception theory, which Stuart Hall touched upon. Encoding is putting meaning into a text (by authors/speakers/film makers/producers), and decoding is what readers, viewers, and listeners take from it. When one decodes a media message, their take is often different from what was encoded in the media message in the first place. Systematic Distortion is when this happens on a constant basis. When SD happens, there is a large margin of understanding.

It draws similarities to the game broken telephone where one message transforms and goes in a completely different direction from what was originally said. The reason for systematic distortion is because when one decodes a text, they take their personal experience to draw out meanings and so, the original meaning that the author encoded in the text is now different from what that decoder received. Systematic distortion is when this frequently happens to a text. This mens that the text now has an array of different meanings that all have some similarities but very clear differences. Systematic Distortion is apparent within the course whenever we discuss how we individually feel about a novel associated within a course. The author encoded his own mean but in the end we all discuss what we believed that meaning to be which makes it a systematic distortion.

ReplyDeleteSystematic Distortion is how the author’s original message is misunderstood and misinterpreted. The reason why systematic distortion is so common is because when two people read the same text they might understand it differently. The way a person understands a text is influenced by their beliefs, their culture, and personal experiences. So, the two that read the same text can have different beliefs on the same subject and thus understand the text in two different ways. In the course, whenever we talk about a novel and the meaning behind it we all have different opinions about it, and that is where systematic distortion comes into play.
